Embracing Challenges: My First Marathon Journey

Updated: Dec 15, 2023

Just last week, I took on what seemed like the impossible – my very first marathon. The journey was riddled with nerves and doubts, especially since my running experience spanned a mere 90 days, with my training never surpassing 18 miles. Yet, I had set a bold goal, not wanting to disappoint myself or those cheering me on. Two decades had passed since my last race, a modest 3-5 mile run during my time in the Marines. Most would begin with a half marathon, which was my initial plan. But then, a thought struck me – why settle for half when I could challenge myself to the full distance?

Here's the catch: I actually despise running. There are countless activities I'd prefer over it. So why choose to endure something so unenjoyable? That question still puzzles me. As the race day loomed, my worries mounted – from diet and hydration to the right gear and the daunting prospect of running alongside my friend Matthew, a seasoned marathoner.

Matthew's presence initially felt like an added pressure. I needed a meticulous plan to replicate my 18-mile training success, and his flexible approach seemed risky. But as the race drew closer, I began to see the value in his company. He shared how lonely 26 miles could feel when run alone, and I soon understood why.

We hit the halfway mark in 2 hours and 16 minutes. Not bad, but then came the real test. By 18 miles, I was in uncharted territory. Every step felt like a battle against my own body – my feet ached, my hip flexor screamed, and unfamiliar stomach cramps set in. But there was Matthew, my rock, suggesting a new strategy: walk for a minute, run for three. His adaptive plan was a lifeline.

Despite the pain, we persevered. Matthew, seeing my struggle, proposed a more manageable pace – two minutes of walking, then four of running. Even walking was excruciating, but quitting wasn't an option. Mile 22 arrived, and with it, a mix of determination and desperation. Matthew, enduring his own pain, refused to let me give up.

Crossing the finish line after 5 hours and 2 minutes was surreal. Matthew's family, including his three-year-old son, awaited us. The sight, forever immortalized in a photograph, was emotionally overwhelming.

This experience taught me a profound lesson: plans may falter, but our ability to adapt and persevere is boundless. Matthew's unwavering support helped me shatter my limits. Together, we're now eyeing our next goal – breaking the 5-hour mark next year.

As I gear up for my first official Half Marathon on February 4th, 2024, I'm setting a target time between 2 hours and 10 minutes and 2 hours and 13 minutes. This journey, brimming with challenges and triumphs, is a testament to the power of resilience and friendship. Join me as I continue to push boundaries and redefine what's possible.
